Earthrise: The Photo That Changed the World

On Christmas Eve 1968, orbiting the Moon at 1.6 km/s some 380,000 km from home, astronaut Bill Anders scrambled for a color film magazine and squeezed off two frames before the scene slipped past his window. One of them, NASA catalog number AS8-14-2383, showed a fragile blue-and-white marble hanging over a dead gray horizon. Nature photographer Galen Rowell later called it "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken" — and it was captured almost by accident, off the flight plan.

The moment: a one-minute scramble off the flight plan

Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 1968, carrying commander Frank Borman, command module pilot Jim Lovell, and lunar module pilot Bill Anders — the first humans ever to leave Earth's gravitational neighborhood and orbit another world. There was no lunar module on this flight; it was a bold test of the trajectory, the navigation, and the crew, three months before anyone landed. On Christmas Eve the spacecraft was circling the Moon in a nearly circular orbit about 110 km above the surface, completing one lap roughly every two hours.

For the first three orbits the crew flew with the windows pointed down at the Moon, so no one had seen Earth come up over the limb. On the fourth orbit, Borman rolled the spacecraft to a new attitude, and suddenly Earth appeared above the lunar horizon. The onboard audio captures the moment almost comically: Anders blurting "Oh my God! Look at that picture over there! Here's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!" He fired off a black-and-white frame first, then urgently asked Lovell to hand him a 70 mm color magazine.

The whole event lasted barely a minute before the geometry changed and the scene drifted out of the window. Anders got off two color exposures. The second, AS8-14-2383, became Earthrise. It was never on the mission timeline — the crew was supposed to be photographing candidate landing sites and lunar terrain, not portraits of home.

The gear: a modified Hasselblad and a lucky lens

The image owes its clarity to a very specific tool. The crew carried a modified Hasselblad 500EL — a Swedish medium-format camera fitted with an electric film-advance motor (the "EL") so an astronaut in bulky gloves didn't have to wind it by hand. NASA stripped the leather, added reflective coatings and a reseau glass plate etched with reference crosses, and loaded it with a 70 mm film magazine of custom Kodak Ektachrome rated at roughly ASA 64 (a slow, fine-grained, low-noise film).

Crucially, Anders had swapped on a 250 mm telephoto (Sonnar) lens instead of the standard 80 mm. Earth from lunar distance subtends only about 2 degrees of sky — about four times the width of a full Moon seen from the ground, but still a small target. The 250 mm focal length magnified that disk enough to fill a satisfying fraction of the frame. The estimated settings were about 1/250 second at f/11, a bright-daylight exposure that makes sense: the sunlit Earth is essentially a floodlit object, and the same "sunny" lighting rules that apply on a clear day at sea level apply to a planet in full sunshine.

  • Format: 70 mm roll film, giving large square negatives with far more detail than 35 mm.
  • Lens: 250 mm — the only glass long enough on board to render Earth with real detail.
  • Film: Kodak Ektachrome, ASA 64, chosen for color fidelity and fine grain over speed.

None of this was automatic. There was no autofocus, no light meter readout in the viewfinder, no chance to check the result. Anders composed, guessed the exposure from training, and pressed the button in the seconds available.

Why Earth 'rises' when it shouldn't

The name is a beautiful piece of misdirection. If you stood on the Moon's surface, Earth would not rise or set at all. The Moon is tidally locked to Earth — it rotates exactly once per orbit — so from any fixed spot on the near side, Earth hangs in nearly the same patch of sky permanently, wobbling only a little from libration. Someone at a lunar base would never watch Earth climb the horizon; it would just be there, day and night.

What Anders saw was an artifact of orbital motion. Apollo 8 was racing around the Moon at about 1.6 km/s (roughly 5,800 km/h). As the spacecraft swept forward, the lunar horizon in front of it dropped away and Earth appeared to lift into view — the same reason distant hills seem to "rise" as you crest a ridge in a fast car. The "rise" was the observer moving, not Earth.

There's a second twist worth knowing: orientation. In the raw negative, the lunar horizon runs roughly vertically down the side of the frame, because that's how the window happened to be aimed. The version printed on posters and stamps — Moon along the bottom, Earth floating above — is rotated about 90 degrees by NASA to match how humans expect a landscape to look. Both are the same photograph; only our sense of "up" differs. In space, of course, there is no up.

The numbers behind the marble

Part of the photo's power is scale, and the scale is genuinely staggering. The Moon orbits at an average distance of about 384,400 km from Earth, so on Christmas Eve 1968 the crew were roughly that far from everyone they had ever known — about 30 Earth diameters away, or a distance that light crosses in about 1.3 seconds. At that range Earth's full disk spans only about 2 degrees, small enough to hide behind an outstretched thumb, yet unmistakably a world.

Consider the contrast the image sets up:

  • Earth's radius: about 6,371 km, versus the Moon's ~1,737 km — Earth is roughly 3.7 times wider and holds ~81 times the mass.
  • Color: Earth is the only vivid object in the frame. Sunlight scatters off nitrogen and oxygen molecules to make the blue haze; oceans and cloud tops add white; land adds tan and green. The Moon, airless, is a study in grays.
  • Sun's distance: both bodies were lit by a Sun about 150 million km (1 AU) away, so shadows on Earth and Moon fall in the same direction — a subtle consistency the eye reads as "real" even subconsciously.

The photograph also freezes a physical truth about our planet's thinness. The bright, atmosphere-bearing band that gives Earth its color is only about 100 km deep — well under 2% of the radius. Blown up, that livable shell is a coat of varnish on a globe, which is exactly the fragility the image made people feel without a single word of explanation.

The photo that helped launch Earth Day

Apollo 8's crew capped Christmas Eve with a live television broadcast — then the most-watched in history — in which they took turns reading the opening verses of the Book of Genesis while the camera showed the barren Moon sliding by. That broadcast, and the photograph released weeks later, arrived in a raw year: 1968 had brought assassinations, war, and unrest. A great many people found in Earthrise an image of unexpected unity — a single world with no visible borders, alone in black emptiness.

The cultural echo was fast and enormous. The image is widely credited with helping catalyze the modern environmental movement; the first Earth Day followed about 16 months later, in April 1970, drawing an estimated 20 million Americans. Anders himself put it memorably: "We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth." The picture appeared on a U.S. postage stamp, on countless book covers, and in nearly every retrospective of the space age since.

Its emotional force is now studied under a name coined by writer Frank White: the "overview effect" — the reported shift in perspective astronauts feel on seeing Earth whole, small, and borderless. Earthrise gave hundreds of millions of people a secondhand dose of that experience, which is why it turns up on lists of the most important photographs ever made, not just the most beautiful.

Common misconceptions — and what came before and after

A few myths cling to the image. First, Earthrise was not the first photo of Earth from lunar distance. In August 1966, NASA's robotic Lunar Orbiter 1 returned a grainy black-and-white view of a crescent Earth over the Moon's limb. Anders' frame was the first taken by human hands and the first in color, and that combination is what made it iconic. It is also often confused with "The Blue Marble" (AS17-148-22727), the fully-lit Earth shot by the crew of Apollo 17 in December 1972 — a different, later, whole-Earth portrait.

Second, people sometimes assume Anders carefully composed a masterpiece. In truth the framing was fortunate: he had seconds, no meter, and no way to review the shot. The craft was in the training and the film choice; the art was partly luck.

Third, no, the Moon does not really have an "Earthrise" you could photograph from a fixed lunar base — as covered above, that requires being in motion, in orbit. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter later recreated the exact 1968 geometry and even produced a high-resolution modern "Earthrise" from lunar orbit, confirming the original's authenticity down to the crater positions.

The photographer's own story closes the arc with sober weight. Bill Anders went on to a career in government and aviation, and died on June 7, 2024, at age 90, when the vintage Beechcraft T-34 he was flying alone crashed into the sea near Washington's San Juan Islands. He spent his final decades as an outspoken advocate for treating our one visible, colorful world with care.
